Recently, a temple in Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, experienced a peculiar theft. A man stole approximately 2000 RMB from the merit box and left behind 1 RMB to seek forgiveness from the spiritual beings. He was quickly caught by the police.
The case took place in a temple in Huichuan County, Quanzhou. Mr. Li, the manager of the temple, discovered the funds missing during lunchtime. This seemed unbelievable to him.
Mr. Li said he only stepped away for lunch, while the rest of the time he had been watching over the temple. Surveillance footage showed a man walking around the temple, pausing to check if the coast was clear. He then used a specialized tool to retrieve the money from the merit box. Surprisingly, the suspect left behind 1 RMB on the altar, presumably to seek forgiveness. The police quickly identified and apprehended the 38-year-old man, Mr. Tan, and recovered all the stolen funds.
