Affluent 25-Year-Old in Ningbo Struggles with Loneliness Despite Wealth: 2 Years and Over 1 Million RMB Down the Drain
Despite her wealth, a 25-year-old woman from Ningbo is struggling with severe anxiety and loneliness, spending over one million RMB on continuous online chat services for emotional support over two years.
Wealth does not guarantee happiness. In Ningbo, Zhejiang, a 25-year-old woman is battling significant mental health issues, despite her affluent background. Her parents only indulge her with money, failing to provide the emotional support she needs, leading to a severe case of anxiety. She has resorted to paying someone to continuously chat with her online, aiming to combat feelings of emptiness and loneliness, which has cost her over one million RMB over the past two years. According to reports by the Xiuhang Daily, the woman, named Xia Qi, sought medical help after failing her exams, hoping to address her emotional disorder and stop her 'chat addiction'. Doctors at the Affiliated Kailuan Hospital of Ningbo University determined that Xia Qi comes from a wealthy family, where her parents placed high expectations on her academic performance. Her efforts to excel in school for the sake of her parents led to depression during high school. Years of stress culminated in her failing both her postgraduate exams and job interviews, which increased her self-doubt. Her parents, believing that money could solve all problems, transferred money into her account whenever her performance at school was unsatisfactory. While money was given, emotional support was not provided. The online chat market in China is vast. Xia Qi gradually became deeply consumed by her emotions, experiencing intense anxiety. Upon discovering online chat services, she was unable to control the urge to engage in them. She needed someone to provide her with emotional support and fulfill her desire for the companionship she felt she lacked. Xia Qi sought a voice chat service that was charged per hour, providing 24/7 company. At night, she could only fall asleep listening to the voice of the chat partner. In the morning, she would immediately make a voice call to start her day, not to engage in conversation constantly but to have a sense of constant companionship to focus on her studies. This extreme level of virtual companionship could cost her up to 3,000 RMB per day. Xia Qi shared that to avoid becoming overly dependent on a single chat partner, she would frequently change her chat companions. Doctor Zhang Zongfeng, from the Hospital's Psychiatric Department, noted that Xia Qi displayed evident signs of addiction to the service. However, she also protected her privacy by frequently changing chat partners and never engaging in video calls or face-to-face meetings. Over the two years, she had already spent more than one million RMB on these services. After diagnosis and counseling, Xia Qi was treated for anxiety and depression. Although she managed to quit her 'chat addiction,' she developed a new habit, replacing it with a housekeeper who could serve as a conversational partner. Her previously two-hour tasks now required five to six hours of a housekeeper's time. Doctor Zhang emphasized that Xia Qi would need ongoing support to help her understand and reevaluate her concept of intimacy, and to learn to rely on genuine emotional connections for companionship and support.
