In Liaoning Province, authorities recently dismantled a telecommunications fraud gang that had infiltrated a hospital to install a GOIP device. The criminals aimed to reroute international calls as if they were originating from the local hospital, thus facilitating phone scams. On October 11, at around 2 AM, two suspects broke into a hospital situated on the jurisdiction of the Guta Public Security Bureau in Jinzhou City. One of them kept watch while the other installed the GOIP device in an electrical box. The plan was to use the hospital as a switching station for the telecommunications fraud, providing communication support for criminal activities conducted offshore. Police forces, aided by the center for integrated technology support, swiftly identified the suspects on October 13 and apprehended them. The investigation is continuing.
GOIP devices are virtual dialing tools that allow for separation of individuals from their SIM cards and enable remote batch dialing. Fraudsters use these devices to impersonate local numbers, concealing their true locations, thus adding a high level of stealth and deception to their scams. This operation highlights the increasing sophistication of telecom fraud schemes in China and the authorities' ongoing efforts to combat such criminal activities.
The case in Jinzhou adds to the growing trend of telecommunications fraud in China, with criminal networks utilizing various tactics to carry out their schemes. GOIP technology has become a favored tool for these groups due to its ability to obscure their true identities, making it more challenging for law enforcement to track them down. As such equipment becomes more prevalent, the battle against telecom fraud continues to escalate, reflecting the evolving nature of cybercrime and the need for advanced technological countermeasures.
