Sino-DPRK Relations: New Yalu River Bridge Opens, Li Qiang Marks It as a Symbol of Friendship
The new Sino-DPRK Yalu River Bridge connecting China's Dandong city and North Korea's Sinuiju city was officially opened yesterday (15th). Premier Li Qiang highlighted the importance of the bridge in enhancing the connectivity between the two nations and established it as a landmark reflecting traditional Sino-DPRK friendship.
The new Yalu River Bridge, which connects China's Dandong in Liaoning Province to North Korea's Sinuiju, was officially inaugurated yesterday (15th). During his video address, Premier Li Qiang emphasized that the bridge would uplift the levels of mutual connectivity between the two countries and would stand out as a new landmark symbolizing the traditional friendship between China and North Korea. The bridge is approximately 3 kilometers long, with construction commencing in December 2010 and the main bridge being completed in 2013. However, due to North Korea's delay in constructing the connecting roads, the bridge was not inaugurated on schedule until 2014. It was after this that, in June, President Xi Jinping's visit to North Korea facilitated the resumption of bridge construction. In his remarks, Li Qiang stated that the new Yalu River Bridge was a key cross-border infrastructure project that both President Xi and North Korea's highest leader, Kim Jong-un, had been actively promoting. He noted that the opening of the bridge would be beneficial for boosting trade and economic cooperation, thereby intensifying ties between officials and people from both nations and solidifying their emotional bonds. The new Yalu River Bridge is located 12 kilometers downstream from the old Yalu River Bridge and is 28.5 meters wide with a four-lane road. The bridge body itself is 3.026 kilometers long, and when factoring in the connecting road, the total length reaches approximately 20.4 kilometers.
