The University of Wyoming has reported a case of a PhD student allegedly poisoning a classmate. At 32 years old, Chinese microbiology PhD student Wang Aili (音译) is suspected of adding the nerve toxin acrylamide to her Vietnamese male classmate’s tea. Wang reportedly underwent questioning by campus police on the 5th of the month and was subsequently arrested at Los Angeles International Airport the following day while attempting to return to China. She is accused of attempting to purchase acrylamide via eBay twice and deleting her account afterwards. The victim, a Vietnamese PhD student and cancer, neurological and genetic disease treatment technology researcher, was attending a conference in August. Upon his return, he experienced extreme fatigue, paralysis, and weakness in his legs. He suspected foul play when he noticed a strange odor in the water from the office coffee machine used to prepare a tea. His wife and office staff boiled the water and extracted 63 milligrams of white powder, which tested positive for acrylamide. Subsequently, the victim and campus police set up a surveillance camera in their shared office. Police footage from September 27th captured Wang inspecting the victim’s desk and rinsing the classmate's cup with its contents. An assistant professor who helped with the analysis stated that Wang had photographed pages of the victim's notes. The police also mentioned that Wang had attempted to purchase acrylamide from eBay twice before deleting her account. On the 5th, she was questioned by campus police, who claimed she had not used that chemical in years. She was then detained at Los Angeles International Airport with several laptops, external storage devices, and documents. Wang's thesis advisor, Gömerski, claims that Wang was jealous of her classmate's accomplishments, failing her first thesis defense, and the victim currently experiences fatigue and has lost the ability to feel in his left hand. Wang Aili is charged with aggravated battery and assault with a potential sentence of up to ten years in prison.
