An incident in Lepu County, Sichuan, where the county magistrate forced low-scoring teachers to take 'shame' photos, drew strong public backlash. The public criticized this behavior as professional bullying. The Lepu County Education and Sports Bureau held an autumn administrative meeting on August 26, 2023, which led to this incident gaining widespread attention. Commissioned bodies under the Liangshan Prefecture discipline inspection and supervision committee promptly launched an investigation, and a formal disciplinary announcement was released on October 16, 2023. The report stated that the county magistrate's interpretation of 'knowing shame and then having courage' was one-sided and that he had arranged for low-scoring teachers to take a 'shame' photo as a backdrop without considering the impact on the teachers' dignity, which deeply harmed the teachers' self-respect. The county magistrate has been reassigned and received disciplinary action within the party, while the county party secretary who was involved will be given a warning and required to receive a warning. Most importantly, the Education and Sports Bureau director has been permanently banned from the education sector. The authorities have pledged to thoroughly reform the evaluation mechanism and to eliminate the reliance on exam scores as the sole gauge of teaching ability, and promised to conduct in-depth rectifications to prevent similar incidents in the future.
