In a major shift from the long-standing stereotype of 'McDonald's with Coca-Cola and KFC with Pepsi,' KFC has officially announced that its thousands of outlets in the US will switch their beverage supplier from Pepsi to Coca-Cola, with the latter's products set to debut in KFC US outlets starting from January 2024. Pepsi launched its acquisition of KFC in 1986, making Pepsi's drinks the go-to choice for most global KFC outlets, including in the US. According to KFC’s website data, it currently operates 3,718 stores in the US. For Pepsi, this is a significant setback, as losing such a large-scale market share is indicative of significant structural changes in the fast-food industry and could impact Pepsi's sales in the US market. Following the news, Chinese consumers were most concerned about whether KFC outlets in mainland China would also switch their supplier. On the 16th of this month, a staff member from a KFC store in Haidian District, Beijing, told the Chinese media outlet China News Trivia that the store currently uses Pepsi and has yet to receive notification to switch the brand. Another store in Xicheng District had the same response. KFC's collaboration with Pepsi for nearly 40 years makes this change highly attention-grabbing.
