A recent wave of online travel scams targeting Hong Kong citizens has emerged, with cybercriminals posing as legitimate travel agencies through fake social media pages and websites. According to a report by The Standard, these impostors have been aggressively marketing travel packages and concert tickets at exceedingly low prices, often exactly replicating the authentic agencies' long-term travel itineraries and promotional content. For instance, one fraudulent page advertised a Macau two-night stay package for just 588 HKD, which included accommodation, transportation, and access to water and water park attractions, offering a significant reduction compared to market prices.
Fraudsters have taken the imitation a step further by recreating official contact details and even the names of travel agencies, making it challenging for consumers to distinguish genuine offers from fraudulent ones. While one fake page claimed tickets to Andy Lau's concert, costing only the original ticket price plus a 50 HKD service fee, another fake account advertised low-cost Macau travel bundles, misleading potential buyers into transferring substantial sums to allegedly legitimate accounts. These accounts frequently featured Chinese phonetic spellings or personal accounts under names such as "Shxxx Xixx Mixx." The true agencies, upon discovering these scams, have promptly issued public warnings, urging consumers to verify all transactions through official channels and avoid sharing personal information or making payments to unauthorized accounts.
Law enforcement agencies have recorded 6,973 online shopping scam cases with a total loss of 230 million HKD as of August 2023. Authorities advise consumers to exercise extreme caution when shopping online, choosing reputable sellers and avoiding electronic payments until goods are received. Utilizing the "Fraud Watch Server" and the "Fraud Watch App" for enhanced protection can help consumers assess potential fraud risks and safeguard their transactions. The Special Task Force advises consumers to maintain high vigilance and report any suspicious activity promptly.
