Hong Kong Customs officers apprehended a 59-year-old mainland visitor at Shau Kei Wan border checkpoint on October 30. During the inspection, they found 1,381 contraband cigarettes in her underwear, front and back pockets of her pants, and concealed these cigarettes with her clothing. The estimated market value of the cigarettes was approximately HKD 6,200, with a taxable value of around HKD 4,500. The woman was subsequently arrested. According to a Customs photograph, she hid the cigarettes in various places and used her clothes to cover them. The woman was found guilty of possessing untaxed cigarettes and failing to declare to the Customs on October 31. She was sentenced to four weeks in prison at Sha Tin Magistrates' Court. Customs welcomed the sentence, stating that the prison term serves as a significant deterrent and fully reflects the severity of the offense. Customs reminds the public that cigarettes are taxable goods under the law. Any individual found importing, handling, possessing, selling, or purchasing contraband cigarettes commits a crime, which is punishable by a maximum fine of HKD 20 million and up to seven years in prison. The public can report suspected contraband activities by calling the Customs 24-hour hotline 182 8080, or via the dedicated email and online forms provided. The woman used her clothes to hide the untaxed cigarettes.
