On October 24, the police in Dadao District of Hong Kong successfully rescued a 41-year-old foreign male who had been lost on the Maicun Ridge in the Taishan Ridge Nature Park. Deputy Chief Inspector Zhang Junhua from the Dadao District Rural Patrol Squad revealed that the swift operation was largely due to the use of drones equipped with thermal imaging technology, greatly enhancing the efficiency of the search and rescue operation. The alert was received at 4:51 PM on the same day, when the man, who had set out alone from Lung Wai Village in the morning, got lost near the Pine Ridge Spur and was found exhausted and unable to proceed. The police, together with the Fire Services Department, used drone thermal imaging to locate the man half an hour after the alert, allowing search teams to quickly find and assist him. After initial treatment, the man expressed gratitude to the rescue team and congratulated them on their successful operation. He praised Hong Kong's efficient rescue services and sincerely thanked the officers involved. Inspector Zhang highlighted how the use of drones with thermal imaging significantly shortened the time needed for search and rescue operations, which are usually demanding both in terms of time and resources. He noted that the police plan to continue utilizing various technologies to enhance operational efficiency and protect public safety. The police urge hikers to avoid lone trips and to download the HKSOS rescue app, ensuring their device's location service is activated. Doing so can automatically report one's location in case of an emergency, providing valuable time to respond. The rescue team can then pinpoint the exact location of the distressed individual more quickly, giving them the ability to provide immediate assistance.
