Chinese designer brand Songmont issued a stern statement yesterday (28th) regarding false claims of it being a Japanese brand that have been circulating online. Amid a persistently tense Sino-Japanese relationship, both businesses and brands have become highly sensitive to any potential political controversy or public scrutiny. Songmont's official website news: Sanrio, parent company of Hello Kitty, ceased collaborations with Japanese spy drama VIVANT. Songmont, a Chinese original design leather handbag and luxury accessory brand, focuses on daily office wear and leisure bags, with popular collections including the Song Bag, Luna Bag, and Bantote Bag. A heated online debate ensued, with some netizens arguing that "the founders chose the names with a Japanese style in mind, but unexpectedly the times have changed," while others defended the brand, saying "the founders named it Songmont because they are from Shanxi, and this name is quite reasonable." On the same day as the statement, Sanrio severed ties with the Japanese spy drama VIVANT, announcing the immediate cessation of related joint products and marketing, and promising to enhance content monitoring to avoid similar issues in the future.

Songmont's founders are from Shanxi Province, and the brand's name, Songmont, is a combination of Song, after one of the founders, Pu Song, and Mont, meaning mountain. It symbolizes "Heavenly High, Yet There is Pine at the Bottom of the Mountain," reflecting an Eastern aesthetic. In the statement, Songmont resolutely declared their intention to pursue legal action against organized spread of false information and malicious attacks. The brand faces mounting backlash for its name and origin, pointing out that it is a wholly Chinese product and brand with no connection to Japan.

The controversy highlights the increasing scrutiny Chinese brands face amid an often-tense Sino-Japanese relationship. As international brand collaborations face potential backlash, Chinese businesses must navigate a complex landscape of public opinion and political considerations more carefully than ever before. Songmont is particularly affected by its name, raising questions about the unintended consequences of cultural choices in brand development. The company's decision to defend its name underscores the importance of careful brand naming and positioning in today's challenging business environment.
