Chief Executive John Lee announced that government officers overseeing renovation works at Wang Fuk Court prior to the fire will be investigated under a new accountability system. The results of this investigation are expected to be unveiled in three months. The report from an independent committee identified "deficiencies and failings" by the Buildings Department, the Housing Bureau's Independent Checking Unit, the Fire Services Department, and the Labour Department in relation to the fire risk oversight during the renovation works at the Tai Po estate. Under the second tier of the Heads of Department Accountability System, a Tier II investigation will be carried out, initiated by the Public Service Commission (PSC). This investigation aims to gather evidence on the individual responsibilities of the officers involved and assess if there was any dereliction of duty, violations of departmental regulations, or breaches of the Civil Service Code. The findings will lead to recommendations for appropriate disciplinary actions and administrative sanctions. Lee expects around 40 to 50 officers to be investigated, with many more witnesses to be interviewed, suggesting that the PSC will face significant pressure to complete the probe within the three-month timeframe.
