Chief Executive John Lee stated on Monday that Hong Kong is committed to attracting global organisations and promoting international legal cooperation. This statement came during the opening ceremony for the International Institute for the Unification of Private Law (known as Unidroit) of its Asia-Pacific liaison office in Hong Kong. The establishment of this office marks the beginning of the annual Hong Kong Legal Week. Lee highlighted the significance of the liaison office, noting it will act as a focal point for engagement with member states and stakeholders in the region and will play a crucial role in Unidroit's legislative and institutional work. Hong Kong, strategically located at the heart of Asia, is seen as an ideal location for this office. The Chief Executive also emphasized that Hong Kong's existing status as a recognized international legal hub and its alignment with global legal standards will further strengthen the collaborative relationship between the city and Unidroit. The city's goals for legal and dispute resolution services are supported by both the national 15th Five-Year Plan and Hong Kong's own five-year plan, which outlines measures to leverage the strengths of the Special Administrative Region's common law system.
