The Fifth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) concluded yesterday, approving the "Decision on Several Major Issues Regarding the Continued Effort to Promote the Comprehensive Strict Governance of the Party." The session highlighted significant accomplishments made since the 18th National Congress, noting the party's self-revolution has reversed issues such as weakened, virtualized, or diluted leadership and eliminated serious threats within the party, state, and military. It emphasized the need to maintain centralized and unified leadership by the Central Committee over anti-corruption efforts, declaring a commitment to intensify the fight against corruption. Additionally, the session decided that the 21st National Congress of the Communist Party of China will be held in the second half of next year.
The four-day session, which ended yesterday, saw 279 participants present, 162 full central committee members and 117 alternate members, a reduction from the original 376 members and alternate members. This reflects the ongoing expansion of anti-corruption efforts. The session also reviewed and adopted the "Decision on Several Major Issues Regarding the Continued Effort to Promote the Comprehensive Strict Governance of the Party," praising the tremendous achievements since the 18th National Congress in the "new era of comprehensive strict governance." It recognized the firm determination exhibited by the Central Committee headed by General Secretary Xi Jinping to address the challenges and reform the party's governance.
The session reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the party's political construction and ensuring ongoing anti-corruption efforts. It highlighted that while much progress has been made, the party still faces new and pressing issues. As the global, national, and party situation evolves, the party must unite its members to maintain and enhance its central role in national development and social stability. The principles guiding the continued strict party governance include focusing on mission tasks, prioritizing political construction, adhering to comprehensive strictness, addressing issues through a problem-oriented approach, innovating methods, leading by example, and upholding party discipline. Emphasizing the need to keep the high pressure on corruption, the session concluded that the 21st National Congress will convene in the second half of 2027, urging all party members to work together to achieve social modernization and advance the rejuvenation of the nation.
