On October 28, Javier Tebas, the president of LaLiga, the Spanish top soccer league, posted on social media to confirm he had met with the Chinese ambassador in Spain to discuss the controversy surrounding Kylian Mbappé’s derogatory comments about China and to seek a resolution. Tebas expressed hope that the incident would not harm the longstanding cooperation between China and Spain. Mbappé had previously endorsed Dongpeng Beverage Group’s electrolyte product, and the bottles featuring his image are expected to be taken off the shelves. Tebas stated that in recent years, LaLiga has been in close collaboration with Chinese government departments, football organizations, media platforms, and businesses, working to popularize Spanish football in China and sharing expertise to foster the development of Chinese football. He emphasized the existing cooperation agreements – particularly the strategic partnership with the Chinese Professional Football League (CFL) set to expire in 2029, and collaborations with entities such as China Central Television (CCTV) – should continue to prosper. Tebas underscored that this relationship is built on mutual respect, trust, and cooperation, and LaLiga is committed to maintaining this foundation, hoping that a single incident does not tarnish the outcomes of their long-term partnership or offend Chinese football fans. The incident stemmed from Mbappé's recent remarks, in which he referenced the “Chinese dictator” meme, sparking strong criticism from Chinese netizens and resulting in the termination of endorsement deals with multiple Chinese brands, including Mengniu, Dongpeng Beverage, WaterWell, and Meikelbluoduo.
