French soccer star Kylian Mbappé, known as "Mambapei" in mainland China, has publicly apologized for his offensive remarks regarding China. On October 27, he posted a multilingual apology statement on his official social media accounts in French, Chinese, and English, admitting that his comments were inappropriate and inadvertently hurt Chinese and overseas Chinese communities. "I am deeply sorry for the pain my words have caused to people in China and around the world. These were certainly not my intentions, and I hold the Chinese people and their history in the highest regard," he wrote in his apology. This apology comes after the incident escalated to national level within Chinese sports and politics. At a press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Kuang Kegang strongly stated: "Any remarks that offend the feelings of the Chinese people will inevitably face the common opposition of the Chinese society." Meanwhile, Olympic gold medalist in table tennis, Fan Zhenpeng, who previously had a good relationship with Mbappé, has removed all shared photos and related posts, and stopped following the French star on various social media platforms. In response to the severe damage to Mbappé’s reputation, multiple Chinese giants, including Eastwind Beverage, Mengniu, and Miao Ke Bluemoon, terminated their contracts with him swiftly. Social networking platform Xiaohongshu also took a decisive stance, clarifying that their content collaboration with Mbappé had ended in late 2024, and began a thorough review and removal of all related promotional material. Additionally, the platform banned Mbappé's official account from commenting and following others. The Spanish LaLiga also apologized, stating that Mbappé’s personal actions did not represent the LaLiga’s stance, while LaLiga president Javier Tebas emphasized that no individual should defile the LaLiga's collaboration with China.
