A Shanghai man has been arrested for fraudulently obtaining over ¥170 million from friends and colleagues using a range of fabricated stories and AI-generated videos. The suspect, surnamed Jiang, used his own image to create deceitful scenes of his ill father, including one where he claimed his father was in need of a respirator. He pretended to be multiple roles, including a doctor, lawyer, and grave caretaker, to increase the credibility of his lies. Jiang had been unemployed for four years and reportedly relied on loans to survive. He told his friends and colleagues that various reasons including marriage, business turnover, and technical investment would require loans. The police uncovered that the money was not used as claimed and that Jiang’s father, whom he claimed was gravely ill, was actually alive. Using AI technology, Jiang created these false videos and pictures. Currently, Jiang is under criminal detention for suspicion of fraud.
The victimized friends and families felt cheated by the sophisticated scams. Jiang fabricated a wide range of identities, including a genuine self, a doctor, a lawyer, and a grave caretaker, to convincingly deceive his victims. The police managed to substantiate that the loan amounts, which far exceeded the necessary funds for his alleged business activities, were not used as claimed. Jiang’s financial irresponsibility and deception have reached a new level with the use of AI technology to fabricate distressing scenes involving his father’s illness.
The case highlights the sophisticated nature of modern fraud schemes. As AI technology advances, it becomes increasingly crucial for the public to remain vigilant and be cautious about unsolicited video messages and unverifiable information. The police are urging the public to report any suspicious activities and to verify the authenticity of any claims made before lending money. There is a growing trend of using AI to create convincing but fabricated content, making it harder for the public to distinguish between genuine and manipulated media.
