North Korean leader Kim Jong-un began his visit to China on April 24, accompanied by Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. Wang delivered warm greetings from President Xi Jinping during the visit to Dandong. On the morning of April 24, Wang Huning welcomed and escorted Kim to lay a floral tribute at the Antimperialist Battle of Korea Memorial Monument Square in Dandong. The national anthems of both countries echoed at the scene, followed by a lamentation ode as two groups of soldiers gently placed the floral tribute on the platform. The ribbon on the floral tribute was inscribed in Korean with the words "Permanently Remember the Chinese Volunteers." Kim also toured exhibits showcasing the bravery of the Chinese volunteer soldiers and the united battle against US forces, and presented historical photos with personal inscriptions to the memorial.
North Korean-PRC relations have been oscillating, yet such mutual visits signify a continued effort to maintain diplomatic ties and cooperation. The Antimemorial of Korea, which Kim visited, is a site dedicated to the Chinese volunteer soldiers who fought alongside North Korean troops during the Korean War. Such cultural exchanges are indicative of the shared historical bond and ongoing dialogue between the two nations. The attendance of Wang Huning, a high-ranking Chinese official, underscores the importance China places on these interactions. Given the complex political landscape surrounding North Korea, these visits could carry significant implications for regional stability and international relations.
