Exco Approves Star Ferry Fare Increase

The Executive Council has approved a fare increase for Star Ferry. Starting January 25 next year, the daily fare will rise to HK$6 on weekdays and HK$18 on weekends. Due to accumulated losses of over HK$100 million since 2018 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company had to rely on debt financing. The government expects the company's financial performance to fluctuate in the coming years due to slow patronage growth, increased operational costs, and interest expenses on debt.

Starting January 25 next year, Star Ferry's daily fare will rise to HK$6 on weekdays and HK$18 on weekends. Monthly tickets will remain at HK$190.

Company Finances:

Star Ferry has accumulated losses of over HK$100 million since 2018 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has had to rely on debt financing to sustain operations. While there were marginal profits in 2024 and 2025, the company is expected to return to deficit due to slow patronage growth, rising operational costs, and interest expenses on debt.

The company spokesperson emphasizes that Star Ferry’s performance has generally been satisfactory with efforts to improve passenger experience, including electronic payment options. The government will encourage Star Ferry’s long-term financial viability through a multi-faceted approach covering fare levels, non-farebox revenue, and government support to maintain quality service provision and preserve this historical landmark for Hong Kong.
