Last year, a serious bus accident occurred in Shenyang, Liaoning, resulting in 6 deaths and 16 injuries. The driver, who was speeding and running a red light, lost control and collided with multiple vehicles and pedestrians.

Background

On the evening of June 17, 2025, a large new energy bus of the Shenyang City Bus Company No. 126 was driving from east to west towards the intersection of Jade Union Road in the Dagang District. A 39-year-old driver, Wang Shuangkai, in order to avoid the vehicles waiting for the red light, privately cut from the third lane to the fourth lane, and then recklessly ran a red light. At the same time, while turning, the bus accelerated and consecutively collided with several pedestrians and 15 motor vehicles, as well as 3 electric bicycles. The accident resulted in approximately 7.6 million yuan in direct economic losses.

The Driver Has Been Charged, and the Bus Company Has Many Issues

The official investigation confirmed that the accident was a production safety responsibility accident. Driver Wang Shuangkai was fully responsible for the accident, and has since been detained on criminal charges for speeding and running a red light. In addition to the driver himself, the internal management of the bus company was extremely chaotic, with driver safety training being mere formality and daily vehicle inspection records being filled out falsely. Furthermore, the company illegally reduced the number of operating vehicles, resulting in increased intervals between services, and drivers were adjusting their shifts without anyone noticing.

Currently, 5 individuals from the bus company have been dealt with according to regulations, and 7 persons from the Shenyang City Transportation Bureau and law enforcement units suspected of regulatory failure have been formally transferred to the Commission for Discipline Inspection and Supervision for accountability.
