The Shek Kip Mei West New Village redevelopment project in Shek Kip Mei has applied to the Urban Planning Committee for higher floor limits, aiming to build 4,189 units, an increase of 846 compared to the old plan. The project involves two plots of land with a total area of about 2.25 million square feet. The floor limits have been raised from 90 meters and 140 meters above the main level benchmark to 143 meters and 180 meters, respectively. Plot 1 is designated for the Home Ownership Company to provide replacement units for the displaced residents of the Shek Kip Mei West Estate, with approximately 1,289 housing units. Plot 2 is proposed to be developed by the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) for "first home buyer" units, utilizing the "modular construction" method, allowing up to 10% of the total area to be exempted, increasing the number of units from 2,058 to 2,900.
The Shek Kip Mei West Estate, a project that played a crucial role in the history of Hong Kong's public housing, has been proposed for redevelopment. Residents originally evacuated in the 1950s due to a fire are set to benefit from the new development. The Urban Renewal Authority and the Home Ownership Company are working towards providing more affordable housing options through innovative construction methods, aiming to cater to the growing demand for first-time home buyers in Hong Kong.
