Taiwanese host Cai Kangyong has confirmed in an interview today that his appearance at Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Taipei Mayor candidate Shen Bohyang's campaign event on April 4 was partly due to a search of a gay bar in Taipei on March 3 by Taipei Police. Cai expressed his disapproval of the search, saying, "You can't expect me to sit by and watch everything return to the way it was," implying that this incident was a setback for efforts to promote the acceptance and dignity of the LGBTQ+ community. He added that despite being heavily criticized and suffering substantial losses from the incident, he does not care about public condemnation, stating that he does not covet preservation of his reputation, as that could lead to stagnation. In the same interview, Cai also mentioned that the recent events have caused him pain, primarily due to owing an explanation to his audience. He admitted that he has been absent from the public eye for some time and now feels compelled to make a statement to his fans, acknowledging his past actions and expressing gratitude, noting that the experience in the Chinese market is something he can never recapture due to lost opportunities. Despite his support for Shen's campaign, Cai emphasized his wish for less division during election periods. He suggested that if Taiwan's elections always become a battle between candidates, the population might struggle to find happiness. He wishes that both parties could campaign with less mutual tearing and harshness and that candidates should not rely solely on the 'killing of the opponent' strategy to win.
