On Tuesday, the Water Supplies Department reported that more than 10,000 homes in Shau Ki Wan and neighboring areas experienced a disruption in their water supply following the bursting of a water pipe. The pipe, which had a diameter of 18 inches and was over 30 years old, developed a crack measuring over one meter, resulting in the pipe's failure. The burst occurred around 10:30 am at a construction site on Shau Ki Wan Road. Chief Engineer of Hong Kong and Islands Region, Lin Tang-tai, stated that the department was working to resume water supply by midnight. The incident has impacted a wide area, including Shau Ki Wan and parts of Sai Wan Ho. Lin Tang-tai noted that the break was not due to the pipe's age but rather external forces. To address the water shortage, more than 10 water trucks, 100 water tanks, and thousands of bottled water have been deployed, along with various support facilities, to provide temporary water supplies for affected residents. The Highways Department issued an apology for the inconvenience and stated that they would conduct an investigation into the cause of the incident and determine whether the contractors are liable. Furthermore, police reported that an 80-year-old resident of a care home was treated at a hospital for injuries to her limbs sustained during the incident.
