Advanced technologies and additional manpower have been deployed at the Huanggang Port to ensure smooth border crossings, according to Commissioner of Customs and Excise Chan Tsz-tat. Speaking after a Commercial Radio programme, Chan reported that customs clearances at the redeveloped port have been smooth. He mentioned that staff from other control points, temporary staff, and retired officers have been assigned to support operations at Huanggang Port. New technologies have also been employed, leading to better detection of smuggling activities at the new port. Chan stated that the department has seized more than 600 million illicit cigarettes in the first three quarters of the year, which is roughly the same as the full-year figure recorded in 2025. However, he noted that over 200 million of these cigarettes were intended for transhipment to other locations rather than for Hong Kong. To further enforce regulations, the department intends to extend the use of effective new detection devices to other control points. Chan expressed confidence in the department’s enforcement results so far and believes they would deter smugglers.
