On October 12, the new Huanggang Port of Entry reopened. It was on the day of its official debut that the first case of non-compliance was uncovered.
In the early hours of that day, a woman's handbag showed suspicious images during a machine scan at the exit hall of Huanggang Port. She was immediately intercepted, and customs officials found $35,000 in unreported U.S. cash, approximately HKD 270,000. Not only is this the first case of non-compliance at the newly operational port, but she might also become the first traveler facing fines or confiscation. According to current regulations, anyone who carries foreign currency in excess of $5,000 without declaring it faces legal penalties.
The Shenzhen Huanggang Customs advises travelers to obtain a 'Custody For Exit Foreign Exchange Permit' in advance if they exceed the limit with large amounts of cash, and to proactively declare it to customs in writing. The Hong Kong Customs urges travelers who enter Hong Kong with high-value cash to declare through the red channel.
